A young Yemeni man was killed and another lost his leg after a landmine exploded as they were returning from a farm in Hayran District, northern Hajjah Governorate. The incident highlights the continuing danger posed by landmines in residential and agricultural areas, where they continue to cause devastating loss of life and life changing injuries.
Hassan Othmani recounted the circumstances of the incident, explaining that his son, Ali, and his nephew, Ahmed, had travelled to their farm to check on their sheep before setting off home on a motorcycle.
According to Othmani, the landmine detonated as the two were making their way back, killing Ali instantly. Ahmed sustained critical injuries that ultimately required the amputation of one of his legs.
He said the force of the explosion caused catastrophic injuries, claiming his son’s life at the scene, while his nephew continues to endure the physical and psychological consequences of his injuries.
Othmani confirmed that the area where the explosion occurred remains heavily contaminated with landmines. He explained that residents have previously discovered and reported several mines to the relevant authorities, but many more remain buried across the area, making movement extremely hazardous.
He added that landmines pose a constant threat to local residents, particularly farmers, herders and children, who pass through these areas every day. According to Othmani, a number of civilians have already been killed or injured by these hidden explosives.
Othmani called on the relevant authorities to take immediate action to clear the contaminated area, stressing that the continued presence of landmines poses a direct threat to civilian lives and prevents residents from safely cultivating their farmland and carrying out their daily activities.
The incident illustrates the enduring humanitarian impact of landmines in Yemen. Years after they were laid in several governorates, they continue to kill and injure civilians, leaving survivors with permanent, life changing injuries and affecting entire communities. The tragedy has renewed calls for sustained demining efforts to secure residential and agricultural areas, protect local communities and prevent further casualties.
