Project Masam demining teams have cleared 3,887 landmines and other explosive hazards across Yemen so far in September 2026, as humanitarian Mine Action operations continue across multiple governorates.
According to the latest operational figures, the items cleared during the first three reporting weeks of September included 51 anti-personnel mines, 573 anti-tank mines, 3,252 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and 11 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Teams also cleared 611,285 square metres of land.
During the latest reporting week (12–18 September), Project Masam teams cleared 1,721 explosive hazards, comprising 44 anti-personnel mines, 85 anti-tank mines and 1,592 items of UXO. No IEDs were recorded during the reporting period. Clearance operations during the same week covered 167,346 square metres of land.
Clearance operations during the week were recorded across Aden, Hadramawt, Hajjah, Marib, Shabwah and Taiz, where explosive contamination continues to pose risks to communities, agricultural activity, civilian infrastructure and access routes.
In Mukalla, Hadramawt, Project Masam’s Survey Team 2 conducted non-technical survey operations and located 1,161 items of UXO, alongside the demolition of explosive ordnance. The weekly report also records significant quantities of explosive ordnance identified through survey operations, with Survey Team 1 locating 154 items and Survey Team 2 locating 1,191 items during the reporting period. The latter were subsequently destroyed during a controlled demolition on 17 September 2026.
In Midi District, northern Hajjah Governorate, Project Masam teams continued clearance operations around water infrastructure and other contaminated areas. Teams worked around water pump station 2 and water well 1, while technical survey, non-technical survey, mechanical clearance and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) activities also continued.
The Community Liaison Team also conducted EORE sessions and non-technical survey activities in villages south of Midi, helping communities recognise and safely report the dangers posed by mines, UXO and other explosive ordnance.
Since operations began in mid-2018, Project Masam has cleared 592,212 explosive threats, including 7,726 anti-personnel mines, 153,049 anti-tank mines, 422,760 items of UXO and 8,677 IEDs. Teams have cleared 85,614,461 square metres of land.
Project Masam continues to carry out clearance activities in accordance with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), helping reduce the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war on affected communities.
