Project Masam’s demining teams in Yemen carried out a bulk demolition operation on Wednesday (6 May), destroying 6,011 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and other explosive remnants of war in the Bab al-Mandab area of Taiz Governorate in western Yemen.
The operation was conducted by Project Masam’s Second Special Tasks Team as part of ongoing efforts to clear mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and explosive remnants that continue to threaten civilian lives across affected areas.
The destroyed items included: 139 assorted shells, 3,200 assorted fuses, 2,536 rounds of assorted ammunition, 36 anti-personnel mines, 58 anti-tank mines, eight hand grenades, nine assorted rockets, seven improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and 18 armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds.
In a statement to the Project Masam media office, the leader of the Second Special Tasks Team, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) expert Adeeb Rajab, said the team works continuously to respond to reports from residents and local authorities. He explained that the team’s role is to reduce the danger posed by explosive remnants of war and IEDs scattered across affected areas by securing, transporting, and safely disposing of them through regular demolition operations.
Project Masam continues to carry out humanitarian clearance operations across several liberated Yemeni governorates by removing mines and explosive remnants of war and responding to emergency reports, helping to improve civilian safety and secure affected communities.
