{"id":1872,"date":"2022-05-23T14:21:34","date_gmt":"2022-05-23T14:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projectmasam.com\/v2\/?p=1872"},"modified":"2022-05-23T14:21:34","modified_gmt":"2022-05-23T14:21:34","slug":"masam-announces-new-landmark-in-yemen-as-it-clears-5000-anti-personnel-landmines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projectmasam.com\/eng\/masam-announces-new-landmark-in-yemen-as-it-clears-5000-anti-personnel-landmines\/","title":{"rendered":"Masam announces new landmark in Yemen as it clears 5,000 anti-personnel landmines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Project Masam has reached a significant milestone after clearing its 5,000th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/yemen-farming-communities-left-ravaged-by-landmine-threat\/\">anti-personnel landmine<\/a> in Yemen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Operating since mid-2018, Masam currently has 32 teams working in liberated areas across the country and conducts humanitarian clearance in accordance with priorities set by the Yemeni National Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 20 May 2022, Managing Director and Programme Manager Ousama Algosaibi announced the teams had cleared a total of&nbsp;5,060 anti-personnel landmines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of anti-personnel&nbsp;landmines is prohibited under the 1997 Mine Ban Convention, to which 164 countries are party.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1997, the Yemeni government signed the Mine Ban Treaty which outlaws the production, stockpiling, export, and indiscriminate use of anti-personnel mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a huge milestone for Masam and for Yemenis affected or displaced by the presence of inhumane anti-personnel landmines. While this is cause for celebration, this achievement is also a stark reminder of the scale of contamination across the country,\u201d Algosaibi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUpon reaching such a landmark, it is crucial we reflect on how we can continue to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/reducing-the-suffering-caused-by-anti-personnel-mines-through-education\/\">support Yemenis<\/a> going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By clearing 5,060 anti-personnel mines, 126,453 anti-tank mines, 200,558 unexploded ordnance (UXO) and 7,360 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), Masam has allowed civilians to return to their homes and lands, and resume their lives after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/18286-2\/\">spending years forcibly displaced<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The news came a few months after Masam reached another significant milestone, having cleared&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmasam.com\/eng\/masam-celebrates-milestone-of-100000-anti-tank-mines-cleared\/\">100,000 anti-tank landmines<\/a>&nbsp;in Yemen since the start of the project in mid-2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project Masam has reached a significant milestone after clearing its 5,000th anti-personnel landmine in Yemen.
