Even on his best days, he says he rarely earns more than US$15, an amount that covers only a small portion of his children’s basic needs.<\/p>\n
However, Hadi’s difficulties extend beyond poverty and limited employment opportunities. In December 2019, he was seriously injured in a landmine explosion while fleeing the conflict with his family.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Project Masam, Hadi recalled the incident that resulted in the loss of his right leg.<\/p>\n
“In late December 2019, my family and I were displaced by the war and fled from the Bani Hassan area to Al-Ja’ada in Midi. While traveling along what we believed was a safe road, a landmine exploded. The blast resulted in the amputation of my right leg on what remains the darkest and most painful day of my life and my family’s. The horrific scene left us all traumatised.”<\/p>\n
The incident left Hadi with a permanent disability and significantly affected his ability to earn a living.<\/p>\n
According to Hadi, landmines continue to pose a threat to communities across the district: “Today, we remain threatened by landmines planted in deserts, valleys, farms, roads, and even near homes. They endanger both people and livestock. We live in constant fear for our children and families. We have lost so much, and our greatest hope now is to be free from this deadly scourge of landmines.”<\/p>\n
Despite his injury, Hadi continued searching for ways to support his family. He eventually began using his motorcycle to transport passengers between neighbouring villages, although difficult economic conditions continue to affect his income.<\/p>\n
Explaining his situation, Hadi said: “I now work on my motorcycle, transporting passengers between nearby villages to cope with the difficult circumstances. Some days I earn enough to provide basic necessities for my children, while on other days I return home empty-handed because of the stagnant economy and the lack of work opportunities. Residents have suffered for years due to the widespread presence of landmines in our vital agricultural areas, which once provided us with a reliable source of income.”<\/p>\n
Hadi’s experience reflects the wider impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war in Midi District, one of Yemen’s most heavily contaminated areas. Over the years, numerous civilians, including women and children, have been killed or injured by explosive hazards buried in farmland, along roads, and near residential areas.<\/p>\n
Beyond the immediate human cost, contamination continues to affect livelihoods, restrict freedom of movement, and limit access to agricultural land that many families depend upon for their income.<\/p>\n
Today, Hadi continues working to provide for his family while living with the long-term consequences of the explosion. Like many residents of Midi, he hopes to see the district free from landmines and explosive remnants of war so that communities can once again use their farms, roads, and villages safely.<\/p>\n
