The organisation described the figures as a stark reminder of the continuing humanitarian impact of explosive contamination across the country.

The findings reinforce the reality that, despite years of clearance efforts, landmines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and explosive remnants of war (ERW) continue to endanger civilians every day, particularly children, who remain disproportionately affected by explosive hazards.

In response to the continuing scale of contamination, Project Masam has strengthened its operational capacity with the deployment of 10 additional clearance teams, expanding its ability to locate, clear and safely dispose of explosive hazards across affected governorates.

Since launching operations in mid-2018, Project Masam has cleared 575,411 explosive hazards, including 7,574 anti-personnel mines, 152,129 anti-tank mines, 8,567 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and 407,141 items of unexploded ordnance, while making more than 83 million square metres of land safe for civilian use.

Ousama Algosaibi, Managing Director of Project Masam, said: “These latest findings are a powerful reminder that Yemen’s landmine crisis is far from over. Every child killed or injured by an explosive hazard is one too many, and every casualty reinforces the urgency of sustained humanitarian Mine Action.”

“Project Masam remains fully committed to protecting civilians by expanding our operational capacity and reaching more contaminated communities. The addition of 10 new clearance teams reflects that commitment and will enable us to remove more explosive hazards, restore safer access to land and infrastructure, and ultimately help save more lives and limbs across Yemen.”

Algosaibi also stressed that clearance alone cannot eliminate the threat. He added: “Humanitarian Mine Action depends on a comprehensive approach. Alongside clearance, continued investment in Explosive Ordnance Risk Education and support for survivors remains essential to reducing casualties and helping affected communities recover.”

Project Masam will continue working alongside national partners and local communities to reduce the threat posed by landmines, IEDs and explosive remnants of war, supporting Yemen’s long-term recovery through sustained humanitarian mine action.

Project Masam has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians from the threat of landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) following new findings highlighting the growing impact of explosive hazards on children in Yemen.
