A Yemeni human rights organisation has documented 1,637 civilians<\/a> killed and 6,135 injured by landmines laid by Houthi forces since 2015, highlighting the continuing human cost of explosive contamination across Yemen.<\/p>\n

The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms said its field teams recorded mine casualties in populated areas, villages, farms and on roads. Among those killed were 198 women and 213 children, while 362 women and 741 children were among those injured.<\/p>\n

More than 798 civilians were left with permanent disabilities, including approximately 397 children, according to the Network.<\/p>\n

Responding to the findings, Project Masam Managing Director Ousama Algosaibi said the figures represented a stark reminder of the consequences of the widespread use of landmines in civilian areas: “Behind every one of these numbers is a Yemeni civilian whose life, family or future has been changed by a weapon that should never have been there. More than 1,600 people reportedly killed by landmines and thousands more injured is an appalling toll. That hundreds of children are reported to have been left with permanent disabilities should demand the attention of the international community.”<\/p>\n

Algosaibi added: “Project Masam\u2019s teams see the evidence of this contamination every day. We find mines on roads civilians need to travel, on agricultural land families depend upon for food and income, around water sources and in communities to which displaced families want to return. Anti-personnel mines are prohibited for a reason: they cannot distinguish between a soldier and a child, a farmer, or a mother trying to reach her home or the hospital.”<\/p>\n

The Network said Houthi-laid mines continue to threaten civilian lives, restrict movement and impede the safe return of displaced communities. It called on the United Nations, international community and influential states to take concrete action to protect civilians and press the Houthis to comply with international humanitarian and human rights law.<\/p>\n

The Network’s figures cover January 2015 to the first half of 2026. SABA reported the findings on 22 August.<\/p>\n

Women and children among the casualties<\/h3>\n

The findings come as Project Masam has published its own investigation<\/a> into the consequences of explosive contamination for pregnant women, mothers and babies in Yemen.<\/p>\n

Project Masam field evidence from Taiz records journeys to healthcare that could otherwise take around 10 minutes stretching to as long as eight hours when mine-contaminated roads forced families onto difficult mountain routes. The investigation also examines the consequences of contamination affecting agricultural land and water sources in a country already experiencing severe food insecurity.<\/p>\n

Algosaibi said the latest casualty figures strengthened the case for sustained clearance and greater international attention to Yemen’s explosive contamination.<\/p>\n

“The international community cannot allow Yemen\u2019s landmine crisis to become normalised. These weapons are still killing, injuring and disabling civilians, while the contamination left behind continues to affect where families can live, whether they can return home and whether they can safely reach the things they need to survive. Yemen needs sustained humanitarian Mine Action, support for survivors and serious international attention to the scale of this contamination.”<\/p>\n
