Reports from civilians who have recognised suspected landmines and other explosive hazards are helping Project Masam teams identify and respond to contamination near homes, farmland, roads and other areas used by communities across Yemen.<\/p>\n

In Bani Al-Zain village, Hayran District, northern Hajjah Governorate, more than 200 students at a school<\/a> in northern Hajjah recently learned how to recognise and report explosive hazards during a Project Masam EORE session. When one of those students subsequently spotted a suspicious object on farmland beside his route to school, he knew what to do.<\/p>\n

Following his report, Project Masam\u2019s EORE and community liaison personnel went to the location, secured the area around the suspected hazard and notified the project\u2019s operations room in Midi so that a demining team could respond.<\/p>\n

Similar reports from civilians in other mine-affected communities have led Project Masam teams to minefields, landmines, IEDs and unexploded ordnance.<\/p>\n

In Midi District, Team 38 responded after local resident Yahya Jaidi reported finding anti-personnel and anti-tank mines while herding livestock south of Al-Ja\u2019ada village.<\/p>\n

Team Leader Engineer Saif Al-Mashmari said the team immediately travelled to the location and conducted an initial field inspection. Four anti-personnel mines and nine anti-tank mines were subsequently removed and secured.<\/p>\n

In Bani Khoury village, Hayran District, village chief Ali Khoury reported a minefield discovered approximately 100 metres from residential homes. Project Masam\u2019s Team 40 responded to the report and surveyed the area, removing mines that posed a threat to nearby residents.<\/p>\n

Community reporting has also supported operations further south. In the Bab al-Mandab area, Team 19 responded to a report of explosive remnants of war, according to Team Leader Engineer Khaled Hussein.<\/p>\n

The subsequent operation resulted in the removal of 990 explosive hazards, including mines, IEDs and unexploded ordnance, from an area close to local communities.<\/p>\n

EORE supporting community reporting<\/h3>\n

Project Masam continues to expand EORE<\/a> activities in communities affected by landmines and other explosive remnants of war, helping civilians understand the hazards they may encounter and how to report them safely.<\/p>\n

In Midi, EORE teams are working in villages, farming areas and locations used by herders. Project Masam\u2019s operations room has instructed teams to intensify activities particularly among farmers and herders, whose daily work may take them into suspected hazardous areas.<\/p>\n

The increased activity follows the discovery of dozens of minefields and IEDs in the area, including explosive hazards close to populated communities.<\/p>\n

EORE activities include teaching residents to recognise potential landmines, IEDs and other explosive remnants of war; keep a safe distance from suspicious objects; and report discoveries rather than attempting to touch, move or dismantle them. Communities are also provided with contact details and hotlines through which suspected hazards can be reported.<\/p>\n

Project Masam\u2019s EORE and community liaison personnel have conducted activities in Al-Ja\u2019ada targeting farmers, herders, children and people travelling through the area as part of continuing efforts to reach those most exposed to explosive contamination.<\/p>\n

In Hays District, Al Hudaydah Governorate, Project Masam also conducted an inspection and EORE activity at a scrap-metal yard, where workers can face particular risks from UXO entering the scrap-metal chain.<\/p>\n

Engineer Othman Al-Jahouri, leader of Team 20, said workers were advised to immediately report objects suspected of being explosive remnants of war and to avoid touching, moving or attempting to dismantle them.<\/p>\n

The reports received by Project Masam provide practical examples of how EORE and community liaison can contribute directly to humanitarian clearance. A student recognising a suspicious object on his journey to school, a shepherd encountering mines while tending livestock and residents reporting hazards close to their homes can provide demining teams with information needed to investigate and respond to contamination.<\/p>\n
