Through these operations, 85,447,115 square metres of land have been cleared, supporting safer returns, livelihoods and humanitarian access across multiple governorates.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1377\" data-end=\"2046\">Since the escalation of the conflict in 2014, large areas of Yemen have been contaminated with landmines and explosive remnants of war, particularly in formerly contested and strategically significant regions. Estimates indicate that between <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/projectmasam.com\/eng\/yemen-is-experiencing-a-real-disaster-but-we-will-continue-our-work-despite-huge-challenges-says-project-masam-md-ousama-algosaibi\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1619\" data-end=\"1808\">one and two million mines<\/a> were laid nationwide by the Houthis, creating <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/projectmasam.com\/eng\/four-members-of-same-family-killed-in-western-yemen-landmine-explosion\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1988\">long-term risks for civilians<\/a>, agriculture, infrastructure and humanitarian operations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2048\" data-end=\"2386\">During the latest reporting week (5-11 September 2026),\u00a0Project Masam teams cleared 1,303 explosive hazards, including one anti-personnel mine, 18 anti-tank mines, 1,276 items of UXO and eight IEDs. Clearance operations during the same period covered 248,945 square metres of land.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2388\" data-end=\"2631\">A significant proportion of the week\u2019s clearance was recorded in Mukalla, Hadramawt, where Project Masam\u2019s Survey Team 2 located 1,000 items of UXO and carried out demolition of explosive ordnance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2633\" data-end=\"2953\">Operations also continued across Aden, Al Dhale, Al Hudaydah, Hajjah, Lahj, Marib, Shabwah and Taiz. In Midi, northern Hajjah Governorate, teams carried out clearance around water infrastructure and suspected hazardous areas, alongside technical and non-technical survey activities.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2955\" data-end=\"3390\">Project Masam also continued Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) activities amid the volatile security situation, with 1,584 people receiving EORE during the reporting period. Activities were conducted by the Community Liaison Team in Midi and teams operating on the West Coast to increase awareness of mines, UXO and other explosive ordnance among communities in conflict-affected areas.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3392\" data-end=\"3582\">Project Masam continues to prioritise the clearance of villages, agricultural land, schools, infrastructure and access routes to enable safer movement for civilians and humanitarian workers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3584\" data-end=\"3945\">Up to five million Yemenis have been displaced since the start of the war, many forced from their homes by active fighting and widespread landmine contamination. Seasonal <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/projectmasam.com\/eng\/landmine-migration-brings-new-threats-to-the-rainy-season-in-yemen\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"3755\" data-end=\"3881\">sand movement and flooding<\/a> and restricted access continue to complicate clearance efforts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3947\" data-end=\"4100\">Despite these challenges, Project Masam remains committed to protecting lives and supporting Yemen\u2019s recovery through sustained humanitarian Mine Action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Project Masam has located and cleared 590,491 landmines and explosive threats across Yemen\u2019s liberated areas since operations began in July 2018, according to the latest cumulative figures covering activities up to 11 September 2026.
