Project Masam began operations in Al Dhale in December 2018 and expanded into Qatabah in May 2019, carrying out clearance, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and risk-education activities across the district. Renewed fighting in Al Dhale during 2026 has added further concern over possible new contamination in areas already affected by earlier phases of the conflict.

The girl was injured on Sunday, 4 October, when a remnant of a projectile exploded in the town of Jalas, also in Qatabah District.

Engineer Abdo Al-Qutaibi, deputy leader of Project Masam Team 18, said schools are an important focus for awareness activities because they bring together children from different villages and communities, including areas close to frontlines where explosive remnants of war remain widespread.

During the session, Team 18 used awareness materials and posters to help students recognise common explosive hazards and understand how to respond if they encounter a suspicious or unfamiliar object.

Students were instructed to keep their distance, avoid touching, moving or inspecting unfamiliar items, and report anything suspicious to the relevant local authorities or Project Masam teams.

Al-Qutaibi said some students reported having seen similar objects on farmland, along roads and in grazing areas, highlighting the importance of giving children clear, practical guidance that they can also share with their families and wider communities.

The activity forms part of Project Masam’s continuing EORE work across Yemen, aimed at reducing the risk posed by landmines, unexploded ordnance and other explosive hazards, particularly for children and other civilians living in contaminated areas.

By combining clearance operations with community awareness, Project Masam works to help people identify potential danger, avoid unsafe behaviour and report suspected hazards so they can be assessed and removed safely.

Project Masam’s Team 18 has delivered an Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) session for students at Huzam Basic Education School in Qatabah District, Al Dhale Governorate, following an incident in which a seven-year-old girl was injured by explosive ordnance while on her way to school.
