Project Masam demining teams cleared 7,444 landmines and other explosive hazards across Yemen between 1 and 14 August 2026, continuing efforts to reduce explosive threats and protect civilians in contaminated areas.
According to the latest operational figures, the items removed during the first two reporting weeks of August included 35 anti-personnel mines, 137 anti-tank mines, 7,226 items of unexploded ordnance (UXO), and 46 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). During the same period, Project Masam teams cleared 646,550 square metres of land, making it safe for civilian use.
During the first reporting week, from 1 to 7 August, teams cleared 5,287 explosive items, comprising 24 anti-personnel mines, 69 anti-tank mines, 5,151 items of UXO and 43 IEDs, while clearing 301,896 square metres of land.
This was followed by the clearance of a further 2,157 explosive items between 8 and 14 August, including 11 anti-personnel mines, 68 anti-tank mines, 2,075 items of UXO and three IEDs. Teams cleared an additional 344,654 square metres of land during the second reporting week.
Clearance operations have taken place across several governorates, including Aden, Al Dhale, Al Hudaydah, Hadramawt, Hajjah, Lahj, Marib, Shabwah and Taiz, where contamination continues to pose risks to communities, agricultural activity and access routes.
The overwhelming majority of explosive hazards cleared so far in August were UXO, with 7,226 items accounting for more than 97% of the total. This highlights the persistent danger posed by munitions remaining in former conflict areas, including farmland, residential areas and routes used by civilians. By destroying recovered explosive items, Project Masam ensures they can no longer function as designed or be repurposed, helping protect civilian populations and remove potentially reusable explosive material from circulation.
Project Masam has also continued clearance operations around key civilian infrastructure, including water pumping and well sites near Midi in Hajjah Governorate, alongside technical survey and Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) activities.
Since operations began in mid-2018, Project Masam has cleared 585,670 explosive threats, including 7,639 anti-personnel mines, 152,422 anti-tank mines, 416,952 items of UXO and 8,657 IEDs. Teams have made 84,378,381 square metres of land safe.
Project Masam continues to carry out clearance activities in accordance with International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), helping reduce the impact of landmines and explosive remnants of war on affected communities.
